Vintage Portrait Oil Painting | Amelia

A stunning portrait of an unknown woman, this fabulous oil on board was painted by the artist Peter Wey.

Born in Hackney, Wey trained at St Albans school of art.  His early work was influenced by one of his teachers, Norman Adams, who then went on to become a professor at the Royal Academy Schools.  Wey’s moorland landscapes from the 1960s owe much to Adams in their richly worked expressionism.

Peter Wey returned to St Alban’s in the mid-1960s, where he developed a layered approach to landscapes with broad strokes of colour.  His work at this time is full of light and openness to the landscapes and seascapes around him.

He was later appointed to the new department of art therapy in 1974, and his painting became a lesser occupation. He went on to become an influential teacher developing some of the most imaginative and influential ideas of art therapy teaching of the 20th Century.

Wey later resumed his painting career, together with his wife the artist Monika Puloy enjoying the peace and beauty of the alpine landscapes of their Swiss home.

Both calming and thoughtful, the gorgeous muted colours of this painting really would look fabulous on any wall in your home.
