About The Artist Toby Horne Shepherd
Born in Dundee, Toby Horne Shepherd was a highly accomplished Scottish artist and respected art teacher, recognised for his exceptional draughtsmanship and sensitive understanding of form.
After studying at Harris Academy, Shepherd attended Dundee School of Art from 1924 to 1926, before continuing his training at the Glasgow School of Art. In 1927, he was awarded a travelling scholarship as well as prizes for both portraiture and landscape painting. He gained his Painting Diploma in 1929, receiving a post-diploma scholarship, and subsequently became Assistant Art Teacher at Glasgow School of Art from 1930 to 1932. During this period, he also produced medical illustrations for Glasgow Royal Infirmary.
Portrait commissions brought Shepherd to London in 1933. He later joined Shoreditch Training College as a lecturer in 1937, remaining there until joining the National Fire Service in 1941. Returning to teaching after the war, he was appointed Senior Art Lecturer in 1947 and continued at Shoreditch until 1954.
Shepherd went on to teach at several notable London art schools, including Ealing School of Art, St Martin's School of Art and the Sir John Cass School of Art. A gifted and enthusiastic teacher, he was particularly admired for his ability to encourage and develop the individual talents of his students.
Although he retired from teaching in 1974, Shepherd's own artistic curiosity never diminished. In later life he attended sculpture classes, creating works in stone and marble that demonstrated his remarkable sensitivity to shape and form.
Throughout his later years, Shepherd remained exceptionally prolific. While his earlier career included oil painting, he increasingly worked in watercolour, drawing and monoprint, often adopting a more experimental and abstract approach. His outstanding ability as a figure draughtsman remained evident throughout his work, including his most adventurous compositions.
Provenance: Helen Hale, the artist's widow.
