Sofas & Armchairs
Frequently Asked Questions
A well-made sofa built on a solid hardwood frame with quality cushioning should remain in daily use for 15-20 years or more. The Beaconsfield Collection is built on FSC-certified hardwood frames that are corner-blocked and hand-tied for rigidity - the same construction method used in quality British upholstery for generations. A hardwood frame can also be re-glued, re-webbed, or re-upholstered if needed, which means the piece can outlast even that lifespan with care. Mass-produced sofas on engineered wood frames are typically designed with a 7-10 year lifespan in mind.
Most sofas sold in the UK today are manufactured at scale using engineered wood frames, synthetic foam, and staple-gun construction that prioritises speed over longevity. A handmade sofa is built differently. With the Beaconsfield Collection, every frame is cut and assembled from FSC-certified hardwood, corner-blocked and hand-tied for rigidity. The cushions use a foam core wrapped in a feather jacket - giving the support of foam with the softness of feather, and holding its shape far better over years of daily use. The scrolled arms and pleated detailing are finished by hand. Divided across its useful life, a handmade sofa often costs less per year than a cheaper replacement that needs replacing twice in the same period.
Leather is the standout choice for pet owners - hair does not cling to it, spills wipe off cleanly, and it does not absorb odours the way fabric can. The Dark Brown Tobacco and Brown Whisky tones are particularly forgiving, and the patina that develops over time integrates minor surface marks into the character of the piece rather than displaying them as damage. If leather is outside your budget, the Heritage Linen in Stone or Dove Grey is a practical alternative - the tight cotton-linen weave resists snagging better than a looser fabric, and the mid tones are forgiving of hair and light marks between cleans. Avoid loose weaves and light colours if pets are a daily reality.
Foam wrapped in a feather jacket is widely regarded as the best all-round cushion filling for everyday use - and it is the specification used across the Beaconsfield Collection. The foam core provides consistent support and prevents the sofa becoming too soft to sit in comfortably, while the feather wrap gives a yielding, enveloping quality that foam alone cannot achieve. Feather-only cushions feel luxurious initially but lose their shape quickly and need daily plumping. Foam-only cushions are supportive but compress over time and can feel hard. The foam-and-feather combination holds its shape well with only occasional plumping needed.
Start by noting the full room dimensions, including any alcoves, chimney breasts, or recesses that affect usable wall length, and mark the position of doors, windows, and radiators. Allow a minimum of 60cm between the front of the sofa and a coffee table or opposite seating, and 90cm between the sofa and a wall or doorway on any primary circulation route. As a useful rule of thumb, the sofa should occupy no more than two thirds of the wall it sits against. Also measure the access route - front door width, internal doorways, and any hallways the sofa must pass through. The Beaconsfield three-seater is 202cm wide and 102cm deep; delivery teams will typically stand it on its end to navigate doorways, so the relevant measurement is the depth (102cm) against door height. Tape out the footprint on your floor before ordering - it takes five minutes and removes any uncertainty.
Eco-Velvet is a 100% recycled velvet fabric made from post-consumer PET bottles - reclaimed plastic that would otherwise go to landfill or the ocean, processed into a yarn and woven into a rich, tactile upholstery fabric. The Heritage Velvet range in the Beaconsfield Collection uses Eco-Velvet certified to the Global Recycled Standard (GRS) and OEKO-TEX Standard 100, meaning both the recycled content and the absence of harmful substances have been independently verified. It combines the sensory richness of traditional velvet with a meaningful sustainability credential - and at a Martindale rub count suited to heavy domestic use, it does not ask you to trade performance for conscience.
Yes. Home Barn offers fabric and leather swatches for the Beaconsfield Collection so you can assess colour and texture in your own home before placing an order. Given that the collection is made to order with an eight-week lead time, ordering swatches first is strongly recommended - what looks right on a screen can read quite differently beside your existing furniture, flooring, and light. Swatches are available for all fabric families: Heritage Linen, Heritage Velvet, Heritage Leather, and Heritage Ticking Stripe.
