The Joys Of Spring

As the seasons begin their transition from darker to lighter, colder to warmer - we can finally start to think about our outside spaces.

Spring can deliver us much optimism, especially when it comes to our gardens. As the weather starts to change and improve, with that comes those wonderful small moments that we can grab outside. We can look back and reflect on last year - the highs and lows, what worked and what didn't - and start to plan ahead on how we want to use our outside spaces, whatever the size.

We can finally fling the patio doors open - why not create some rustic ambience and pop a small French iron table close to the house to enjoy an alfresco breakfast or evening aperitif on the terrace. The warm summer nights may seem but a distant memory and a while away yet - but now is the perfect time to get outside into nature and breathe it all in.

On warmer spring days, why not venture further into the garden and start to spruce up our outside space for the new season. Time spent outside and close to nature will lift spirits, especially when the sun is shining. Neglected after the long winter, begin by sweeping your paths and patios and tidying up flowerbeds and last year's pots. Now is the time to start planning your space for the coming months ahead and create your perfect outdoor haven that will promote well-being and relaxation.

An outdoor space should offer a feeling of escape and seclusion, be a place to relax and unwind, and be a sanctuary for both people and animals alike. Diffuse external distractions and undesirable noise with a unique water feature that will appeal to all the senses whilst offering soothing natural elements. You may also discover that the water also attracts welcome visitors such as birds and insects to enjoy your space.

Embrace natural, sustainable materials whenever you can. Choose handcrafted reclaimed wood garden furniture that will last you a lifetime and mix it with vintage plant pots and antique stone troughs filled with herbs and lavender to create a classic rustic look that evokes memories of warm summers abroad. Position large antique urns close by and plant with olive trees to create welcome natural shade on hot summer days. Or for a more contemporary look, repurpose some vintage galvanised metal planters, troughs and tanks.

And don’t forget comfort! Even the smallest of spaces can be appreciated from a comfortable seat. Blur the lines between indoors and outdoors and create an inviting and intimate space for you and your guests to relax in with soft cushions, warm knitted throws and sumptuous sheepskin rugs that will encourage everyone to linger long after the sun goes down.

Refresh and inspire your exterior the Home Barn way, with unique antique and vintage treasures to create your perfect outside haven that you'll never want to leave.
