Cupboards are closed-door storage pieces without glass panels - the most purely functional of our three cabinet categories. The category is deliberately broad: it includes small single-door pieces for tight spaces, tall double-door elm cupboards with real visual authority, linen presses, French armoires, Indian dowry chests, and antique kitchen islands. What they share is solid doors and a commitment to concealment, with the quality of timber and construction that makes concealment feel like a choice rather than a compromise.

The most common mistake is buying a piece too large for its space - antique and reclaimed cupboards often have considerable depth as well as height and width, so measure all three carefully. Check: the wall space, including any skirting boards; the depth against available floor space, allowing for door swing; doorways, stairwells and tight corners for delivery; and ceiling height - a very tall cupboard can feel oppressive in a low-ceilinged room.

Look for: solid secondary timber inside - drawer linings, backboards and internal shelves in genuine old pine or oak, showing real age and hand-tool marks; doors that hang true, opening and closing without catching and sitting flush when closed; original hardware where possible - old iron or brass hinges and catches carry their own patina and are difficult to replicate; and a stable base, with sound legs or feet. Some restoration is entirely normal in antique pieces - a replaced hinge, a repaired shelf, a re-waxed surface doesn't diminish character. What matters is that the core structure is sound and any restoration was done with care. We do not sell pieces that require remedial work; what you receive should be ready to live in your home from the day it arrives.

Yes - a tall elm or pine cupboard with adjustable shelving suits dry goods, preserves, crockery and kitchen sundries well, and the density of the timber keeps the interior cool and stable, a genuine practical advantage for food storage. Look for a piece with a mix of shelf heights: deeper lower shelves for larger items, narrower upper shelves for jars and tins. Position away from direct heat sources for best results.

Many can. A tall double-door cupboard with sufficient internal height can accommodate hanging clothes with the addition of a simple rail - a considered alternative to fitted wardrobes in a period property. For boot room storage, look for enough internal depth to accommodate boots comfortably (most of our taller cupboards run 45-60cm deep), and ideally a lower section that can be left open or fitted with a removable shelf to keep muddy footwear separate.

Both work well, and the closed-door nature of a cupboard is a particular advantage - toy storage behind solid doors means a room can be tidied in seconds, and home office equipment, paperwork and cables disappear entirely at the end of the day. For toy storage, look for a single large open interior or adjustable shelving that can take baskets and boxes; for home office use, a combination of drawers and shelved space works best. Because antique cupboards were built for genuine domestic use, the drawer and shelf construction tends to be considerably more robust than modern flat-pack alternatives - dovetail joints, solid timber throughout, and the kind of structural integrity that comes from a piece already having survived a century of daily life.

Yes, and in many respects more so than modern equivalents - antique elm and pine are exceptionally dense, stable timbers, and a well-made Victorian or Edwardian cupboard has already survived over a century of daily use. The one practical consideration is internal organisation: antique cupboards predate modular shelving and drawer inserts, so it's worth measuring the interior against what you plan to store.
