Gifting vintage this Christmas

It often surprises people just how busy we can be at Home Barn over Christmas. When people think about vintage furniture and antiques they tend to think big – dining tables and chairs, antique cabinets and rustic coffee tables. But, there is so much more to vintage shopping and some of the smaller items, and home accessories can make wonderful, one of a kind Christmas gifts.

Here’s some of our Home Barn favourites for gifting vintage this Christmas.

We always think decorations make a nice present. Whether you’re able to give them ahead of time to be used this year, or wrapped up in a stocking ready to use next year, whoever you gift them to will always think of you as they decorate year after year.

This year we love these vintage bird feather baubles which add a pop of colour and a definite vintage feel. Try adding them to your Christmas tree, hanging them off a banister or stringing them along some aged twine to create a mantelpiece feature interlaced with holly, berries and mistletoe. Candle holders are a great gift all year round, but really come in to their element in the winter months when you can light up a candle on those dark evenings. There is such flexibility with candle holders as they can be used to decorate the dining table, a ladder shelf, coffee table or sideboard in almost any room of the house.

One of our current favourites is this horn candelabra which is perfect for the dining table or sideboard and with space for three taper candles it’s sure to make a bold statement and add an instant dash of vintage.

Think long cold winter nights with a glass of red by an open fire and you instantly think of sheepskin rugs! They’re perfect for throwing over an armchair, sofa or dining chair and also come in half sizes to make the perfect bar stool topper.

This rug comes in a pale grey which makes it unusual and unique and looks great against natural wood, leather and muted colours. It’s a Tibetan sheepskin, which means the wool and hide are lightweight, unlike British sheepskins which are thick and heavy.

If you have a little more budget to play with and want to buy something really special then a mirror always works a treat. Leaning a mirror on top of a chest of drawers or sideboard is one of our favourite ways to style vintage furniture. Pop some candles in front or drape with fairy lights to add a festive touch and create beautiful reflections.

This lovely window mirror has it’s original green chippy paintwork giving it a wonderful modern rustic appearance and would work just as well on top of a modern cabinet as it would on a vintage chest of drawers or antique cabinet.

So why not come vintage treasure hunting with us at Home Barn this Christmas? There’s lots to do in the local area to really make a day of it. We highly recommend a country walk followed by a pub lunch. But if you can’t make it down, don’t worry! We put (almost) everything online!
