The best wood depends on your priorities — durability, colour, and character. At Home Barn, we specialise in four key timbers:
Oak — A dense hardwood known for its strength and durability. It has a warm honey tone and tight grain, ideal for everyday family use. Oak ages beautifully and is one of the most reliable long-term choices.
Elm — Highly distinctive, with a unique open grain and natural texture. Extremely hard-wearing with a lighter, more contemporary appearance while still being incredibly robust.
Teak — Provides our darkest finish, with a rich tone and characterful grain. Naturally oily and durable, it develops a beautiful patina over time — perfect for a bold, statement table.
Pine — Softer than hardwoods but offers a natural, relaxed look with visible grain. Will develop marks over time, adding to its charm and making it a popular choice for casual interiors.

Protected & Family-Friendly Finishes
Our Reclaimed Wood Refectory and Cotswolds dining tables are finished with a clear matt protective varnish — water-repellent, hard-wearing, and ideal for everyday family use. Simply clean with a soft damp cloth and avoid harsh chemicals.
Natural & Unfinished Timber Tables
Our Hand Crafted Salvaged Dining Tables are supplied in a raw, untreated finish, giving you flexibility over how the table evolves:
• Leave untreated for a traditional scrubbed look, removing marks with gentle cleaning.
• Apply a furniture wax for light protection — enhances durability while maintaining the natural colour and can be reapplied to reduce the appearance of marks or scratches.
