Few pieces capture the Home Barn aesthetic quite like our antique rustic wooden stools. A signature of the Home Barn collection, we have been sourcing these wonderfully simple pieces for their individuality, history and ability to bring an authentic layer of age into contemporary interiors.
Each is a genuine antique stool, handmade using traditional construction methods and bearing the beautifully irregular character that comes from decades of use. Predominantly crafted from elm, with occasional examples in oak, pine, cedar or mixed timbers, no two are ever quite alike.
Time has softened their edges and enriched their surfaces, leaving wonderfully tactile grain, old knots, cracks, historic repairs, remnants of paint and the knocks and markings of their previous lives.
It is precisely this imperfection that makes them so special.
An Interior Design Favourite
The antique elm stool has become something of an interior design icon, particularly within modern rustic, contemporary country and understated European interiors.
Loved by interior designers, stylists and collectors, their beautifully primitive form provides a counterpoint to more refined furniture. Place an old elm stool beside a contemporary bed, linen sofa or freestanding bath and its age immediately introduces warmth, texture and history.
Use yours as a rustic bedside table, an occasional side table beside an armchair, a small bathroom stool, a place for books or simply as a sculptural antique object in its own right.
Their relatively small scale also makes them an easy way to introduce a genuine antique into a contemporary home without changing an entire room.
Antiques Are at the Heart of Home Barn
At Home Barn, antiques aren't an afterthought to a contemporary interiors collection. They are fundamental to the way we believe beautiful homes should be created.
We love interiors that combine old and new: contemporary furniture alongside pieces that have already lived a life. Antique furniture introduces something that newly manufactured pieces simply cannot reproduce — genuine patina, individuality and a sense of history.
Our rustic stools embody that philosophy perfectly. Simple, useful and wonderfully unpretentious, they have become a cornerstone of the Home Barn collection and one of the pieces that best represents our approach to antiques in contemporary interiors.
Choose Your Exact Antique Stool
This is particularly important to us.
Every stool available through this listing is individually photographed and individually measured.
We don't simply show you a representative stool and select one at random. Because every antique stool is different, we want you to be able to choose the exact piece you will receive according to its dimensions, shape, timber, colour and individual character.
Simply select your preferred stool from the options using the corresponding photograph and measurements.
The stool pictured is the stool you will receive.

A Note on Antique Character
These stools are chosen precisely because they are old, rustic and individual.
Please expect the characteristics associated with genuine antique furniture, including knocks, dents, cracks, splits, old repairs, filler, worn edges, uneven surfaces, variations in timber and colour and, occasionally, remnants of historic paint.
Some stools are beautifully gnarled and heavily weathered; others have quieter surfaces and more subtle patina. Their handmade construction also means they may not be perfectly symmetrical or completely level in the way a newly manufactured piece would be.
These aren't imperfections we are trying to disguise — they are the reason we source them.
Please study the individual photographs carefully and choose the stool whose character speaks to you.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the stool I receive the exact one shown in the photograph?
Yes. Every available stool is individually photographed, measured and listed so you can select your exact piece.
Are these genuine antique stools?
Yes. These are genuine old stools rather than newly manufactured stools made to look antique.
Are all the stools made from elm?
Most are elm, although we occasionally source examples made from oak, pine, cedar or a combination of old timbers. Where appropriate, differences can be identified within the individual option.
Can an antique stool be used as a bedside table?
Absolutely. Antique elm stools are particularly beautiful used as small rustic bedside tables, where their timeworn timber provides a wonderful contrast to linen, plaster, contemporary lighting and more refined furniture.
How else can I style an antique wooden stool?
They work beautifully beside a sofa or armchair as an occasional table, in a bathroom beside a freestanding bath, beneath a console, beside a fireplace, or simply styled with a favourite book or object.
Why do antique stools vary so much?
They were individually handmade rather than factory produced and have subsequently experienced many years of use. Differences in construction, timber, dimensions, repairs and patina are consequently part of their character.
Are antique stools suitable for sitting on?
These are genuine antique pieces and their condition and construction vary. We recommend choosing them principally for decorative and occasional use rather than assuming every individual stool is suitable for regular seating.
