To help ensure a smooth delivery, we kindly ask that a capable adult is available to assist the driver with larger furniture items where required. Delivery is made to the ground-floor entrance of your property.

For complete peace of mind, we also offer a premium two-person delivery / assembly service on many of our larger furniture pieces.

Product Description

Beautifully handcrafted from a single piece of solid hardwood, these Vintage Rwandan Tutsi Scoop Bowls are authentic examples of traditional East African craftsmanship, dating from approximately 1940–1970.

Originally used by the Tutsi people of Rwanda for carrying and serving grains, milk and other everyday foods, each bowl was carefully carved by hand before being used within the home for many years. Their wonderfully sculptural forms, smooth hand-worked interiors and rich aged patina tell the story of generations of practical use.

One of the most distinctive features of these bowls is the presence of traditional aluminium repairs. Rather than replacing a damaged vessel, skilled local craftsmen repaired cracks using hand-cut aluminium patches, extending the life of an object that was considered far too valuable to discard. Today these visible repairs have become one of the most sought-after features, celebrating the bowl's history while adding beautiful decorative detail.

Today these bowls make striking decorative objects. Style them on a kitchen island, dining table or console, display them on open shelving, or use them as sculptural centrepieces filled with seasonal foliage, decorative objects or dried stems. Their organic form and rich patina work beautifully within contemporary, rustic, wabi-sabi and Belgian-inspired interiors.
